Why power-plant pumps need the toughest seals
- Boiler-feed heat and pressure push past what an elastomer secondary can take — metal bellows seals remove the rubber from the hot zone.
- Flashing and thermal distortion open the faces; a cooled flush (Plan 23) keeps them stable.
- Cooling-water intakes carry silt and debris that abrade soft faces — silicon carbide pays off.
- Availability is everything — a seal failure on a boiler-feed pump is lost generation, so the seal is specified for margin.

Power Plant Pump Seal FAQ
Why metal bellows seals for boiler feed?
At boiler-feed temperatures an elastomer secondary hardens and fails. A metal bellows seal replaces the rubber with a welded metal bellows, so there’s nothing to cook in the hot zone.
What flush plan for high-temperature pumps?
A cooled recirculation flush — API Plan 23 — keeps the seal faces below the flashing point and stable. Cooling-water intakes with silt often add a Plan 32 clean barrier.
